In this role the Chief Advancement Officer will build a robust development department. This role also is Executive Director of the Shawnigan Lake School Foundation and will manage a small but growing endowment. Executive Director of Advancement

Reporting to the Headmaster, the Executive Director of Advancement will provide expert and energetic leadership of the Advancement Office at the College. The Executive Director of Advancement will assume responsibility and accountability for the development, design, implementation and oversight of all areas of the College’s fundraising and advancement activities. The successful candidate will bring innovative and strategic thinking to alumni relations, donor development, stewardship and recognition, and marketing and communications as they support fundraising and advancement for the College. The Executive Director of Advancement will manage a team of professionals in the Advancement Office. The successful candidate will work closely with the College’s Senior Leadership Team and the Board of Governors.

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, CFRE designation strongly preferred
  • A minimum of 5-7 years of senior leadership experience in development/fundraising/advancement, preferably in an educational setting
  • A demonstrated track record of fundraising success at all program levels particularly at the level of major gifts. This includes the ability to plan, organize and implement fundraising activities effectively, as well as participate in high-level individual, corporate and/or foundation solicitations.
  • Experience in promoting and coordinating the involvement of volunteers, including Boards.
  • Comprehensive computer skills, including familiarity with fundraising databases, Word and Excel.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills, strong organizational and managerial capabilities, ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and a team of fundraising professionals.
  • Ability to effectively communicate the vision and mission of Royal St. George’s College, while capturing the interest of prospects and donors.
  • Track record of successful proposal preparation and polished presentation skills.
  • Must exercise significant judgment and confidentiality in working with prospects, volunteers, and RSGC faculty and staff.
  • A strategic team player who is ambitious and can mentor, coach and develop people .

Founded in 1829, Upper Canada College is a leading independent school for boys SK-Grade 12 located in the heart of Toronto. The College has a very well developed Advancement program with strength in market research, events, mentoring and annual giving as well as a busy and exciting work environment.

The Manager, Alumni Relations and Common Ties is accountable for the success of the mentoring, young alumni, student & reunion programming. Specifically, the incumbent is accountable for developing strategic plans that will show consistent and strong growth in Old Boy engagement and participation rates/satisfaction rates. S/he is accountable for ensuring that the quality of communications, both in tone and content, is consistent with that of UCC. The programs managed by the incumbent represent the institution to thousands of important internal and external stakeholders.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop, foster and strengthen relations with UCC’s alumni.
  • Plan and develop programs that increase constituents’ affinity and connectivity to UCC as an ambassador for the College’s Advancement office and the external ‘face’ which parents and alumni associate with UCC.
  • Implement all friend-raising events, programs and services aimed at Old Boys, friends, and parents where appropriate.
  • These include but are not limited to the Common Ties Mentoring Program, branch activities, reunions, young alumni and student programs.
  • Activities include: volunteer engagement, program development, communications development and social media management, performance measurement tools, promotional materials, development of database criteria and analysis.
    • Work collaboratively with the manager of annual giving on joint programs to optimize efficiency and revenue generation.
    • Manage volunteers including the recruitment, training, recognition and stewardship of Old Boy and parent volunteers and serve as the key staff support to a variety of committees.
    • Work with volunteers and others to provide services to students and otherwise engage them in Association matters prior to graduation.
    • Develop and maintain “knowledge sharing” relationships with the administrators of alumni programs at other schools and other organizations and make recommendations for the enhancement of the UCC program based on knowledge derived from these relationships.
    • Actively participate in the organization’s strategic planning process.
    • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Competencies and Education Required:

  • Minimum of 4 years progressively responsible experience in Advancement, preferably in an educational setting.
  • University degree preferred.
  • Proven program management experience, including annual planning, budget management and event management.
  • Volunteer management skills (recruitment, training, development and recognition).
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Sound judgment and problem-solving, an innate willingness to find reasonable solutions and work independently to do so.
  • Service orientation and teamwork oriented personality.
  • Strong presentation skills.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, work with interruptions and multi-task.
  • Ability to work well with client-serve databases, including design, queries, and reporting.
  • Highly competent working with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Some non-conventional work hours (early mornings, evenings, weekends) and 10-15% travel will be required.
